Charcoal Drawings

I only recently began my journey into the manipulation of charcoal. More specifically working with vine charcoal and compressed charcoal. It was difficult at first for me to understand the contours of shadows as well as gaining a better sense of hand contour practices. I found it difficult to rid myself of stylistic forms versus realistic ones. One of my first still life’s was the “Basic Still Life” seen below. As you can tell it shows the least range in values compared to the “Wine Bottle Still Life” and the “Skull,” but even those pieces are flawed. Hopefully I will be able to track my progression as time goes on here. Then with even greater hopes, may I master this medium some day.
